Carroll ISD and District Diversity Council Launch Dragon Cultural Survey on Dec. 4

Carroll ISD, in conjunction with the District Diversity Council, has authorized K12 Insight to conduct a Culture Survey December 4-18. The survey is voluntary and anonymous with K12 Insight collecting all survey results. Overall findings will be shared with CISD and the public on January 13, 2020.

For the past year, a 63-member District Diversity Council (DDC) has been studying the changing demographics and researching ways other school districts have addressed bias reduction and cultural competence. The DDC already made recommendations to the School Board to revise the Student Code of Conduct to better align discipline consequences for inappropriate acts that target an individual or group of individuals for their race, color, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or age.

Now, Carroll ISD would like to hear more from Dragon families about their experiences in Carroll ISD. As part of this work, the district, in conjunction with the DDC, is asking all parents and guardians to take part in a voluntary, confidential survey.

CISD has partnered with an independent research and communications firm, K12 Insight, to administer the survey and compile the results. All responses are strictly confidential. No one in Carroll ISD will know who participates or be able to connect a participant to their answers. K12 Insight’s final reports will share only the overall findings and themes, not individual responses.

Several questions in the survey address overall parent perceptions about diversity in CISD, as well as culture and climate, safety and behavior, access and opportunities, policies and procedures, curriculum and instruction, family support and inclusion, and demographic questions.

There will be three separate surveys that will be used to collect data. The first version that will be accessible is the parent survey which will launch on December 4, 2019. This survey is releasing first to give parents ample time to answer all questions before the December 18, 2019 deadline. Families will receive one unique link to the survey from K12 Insight through the first listed email in Carroll ISD’s Skyward Family Access Portal. If parents cannot locate the email in their inbox, they are asked to check their Junk/Spam folder. If parents are still unable to locate the email, email west@k12insight.com for more assistance.

On December 11, a unique link to the staff version of the survey will be sent to all CISD employees.

For those CISD employees who currently have students enrolled in the district, they will have the opportunity to complete two separate surveys. They will complete the parent survey based on their experiences and their child’s experience. The employee survey will be answered based on their experiences as an employee.

During the two week window, students in grades 7-12 will be given the opportunity to take this voluntary and anonymous survey during their English class. The teacher will be sent instructions on the survey and will assist the students in accessing the survey online.

The data K12 Insight collects in this culture survey will assist CISD and DDC with key components of the Cultural Competence Action Plan, including the:

• integration of culturally competent lessons across PK-12 curriculum & instruction;
• alignment of culturally responsive policies and procedures;
• planning of guest speakers, diversity celebrations and programming;
• implementation of staff training;
• recruitment and retention of quality staff reflective of our student population; and
• communications and cultural outreach.
